Setouchi Triennale 2025: New Exhibition for the Summer Session "Beyond the Border – Prayer"

2025/09/08

This summer marks the 15th anniversary of the Setouchi Triennale, where our company's newly produced work “Beyond the Border - Prayer,” created in collaboration with Taiwanese artist Lin Shuen Long, is now on display.
This triennial contemporary art festival, held every three years across the islands of Setouchi, attracts approximately one million visitors from Japan and abroad.

  • 197 sculptures installed along the coast of Teshima-Kō
  • Coordinates and distances from Teshima to capitals and other major cities in various countries and regions are listed.

The first exhibition of Mr. Lin's Statues of the World's Children took place on Shodoshima in 2016. That work was made of sand, gradually eroded by the waves and rain until it eventually disappeared. Reborn, this work will be exhibited in the summer of 2025 on the shores of Teshima-Kō, as a terracotta installation comprising 197 statues. The children's bodies bear the coordinates and distances from Teshima to capitals and major cities around the world. Facing their respective directions, they pray for world peace, their own futures, happiness and tranquility.

The Statue of Children of the World, created in the Ōbe district of Shōdoshima in 2016, returns to the Setouchi after nine years. It will be installed in a coastal plaza in Kōsei, pointing toward children in a specific country or region based on distance, latitude, longitude, and direction.
Amidst unstable global conditions marked by war and civil strife, the children stand, smiling, hands on their chests, feet planted in soft sand, leaning forward slightly. They pray for world peace, their own futures, happiness, and tranquility.
